A Car Accident And What Happened Afterwards
By Ian Wanstall, Joint Managing Director
I am one of the Directors of Litigation Indemnity Consultancy Limited, the company behind One1one Accident Aftercare. I am also a solicitor and I have worked in private practice for nearly 18 years during which I specialised in road traffic accidents. Some of my professional experiences - and also my personal ones - may help you to better understand our product and its benefits.
Many years ago as a Partner in my firm I was lucky enough to be provided with a very nice E class Mercedes as my company car. Unfortunately I was involved in an accident where luckily I was not injured but alas the same could not be said for the car!. The Mercedes needed some substantial repairs and the insurance for the vehicle provided by my firm didn't include an Accident Aftercare package. I personally didn't have membership of a scheme like One1one Accident Aftercare.
"the insurers promised the use of a courtesy car"
Like many motor insurance products the insurers promised the use of a "courtesy" car while mine was being repaired by the insurer's approved repairer.
Vehicle repairers want to be on an insurer's approved panel of repairers as this guarantees a good flow of new repair work. Often a condition of being on an insurer's approved panel is that the repairer must supply a courtesy car to the insurer's customer while their car is being repaired. The cost of supplying a courtesy car is a significant and unwelcome overhead for the repairer. Repairers will often therefore acquire one or more small cheap cars just to satisfy this obligation to the insurer.
Returning to my own situation, my car was to be at the repairers for some time but their Nissan Micra courtesy car was being used by another customer. I therefore had to wait and make arrangements until the Micra became available.
"...it was not what I was quite used to"
When I did eventually get the use of the Micra it was not what I was quite used to! It was a manual and my car was an automatic and it was a lot smaller. Now I'm not a car snob, and whilst I was grateful to at least have a car to use, this coincided with a time that I was doing a lot of travelling as I had an important trial further south from my home.
I also have two children who were quite young at the time and as anyone who has young children will testify they always seem to need a huge amount of "stuff" whenever you go anywhere. Suffice it to say the Micra was not the ideal car for me either for work or leisure.
"Now, if I had been a member of One1one Accident Aftercare..."
Now, if I had been a member of One1one Accident Aftercare, and provided the accident was either not my fault or only partially my fault, I would have been supplied from the time of the accident (as my car was un-drivable) with not just another vehicle but with another E Class Mercedes of the same specification as mine.
Plus the repairs could have been organised for me, supervised and chased for me at no cost to the cars insurers. The cost of the repairs would have been recovered from the other drivers insurers so I would not have had to pay the excess when I collected the car and my no claims discount might not have been affected.
This little tale makes a further point. You will recall that this was a company car insured by my firm. Company insurance policies often don't have all the add on benefits that you might pay extra for on your private motor insurance. If you find that the insurance on your company car doesn't cover such things as a replacement vehicle or the recovery of damages for your injuries and other personal losses One1one can help you under these circumstances.
Just because you may not need all the services that One1one provides do call the helpline number and those you speak to will advise you as to which benefits might be useful to you. You are very welcome to take advantage of those benefits that you do require even if you don't require all the services we offer.
